Tea, poetry, and the slow brown Tigris

Baghdad rewards travelers who arrive curious. Start on Mutanabbi Street on a Friday morning, when booksellers spread poetry collections and physics textbooks across the pavement and the crowd argues happily about both; at the river end of the street, Shabandar Cafe has poured sweet dark tea under portraits of poets since 1917. The Iraq Museum holds the Warka Vase, Assyrian winged bulls and Sumerian tablets older than the pyramids — five thousand years of Mesopotamia in a few quiet halls. In Kadhimiya, the twin golden domes of Imam Musa al-Kadhim's shrine rise over a market smelling of cardamom and grilled kebab; women should bring a headscarf, and abayas are lent at the gate. End the day with masgouf — river carp split and slow-grilled over embers — on Abu Nuwas Street as the Tigris turns copper. Come between October and April; summer regularly passes 45C. Expect checkpoints, direct questions from friendly strangers, and more invitations to tea than you can possibly accept.

FROM OUR TRIP JOURNAL

On our October trip, a bookseller on Mutanabbi Street recognized two travelers from our spring group and had set aside a 1962 postcard of Rasheed Street for them, refusing to take a single dinar. We stayed two extra hours at Shabandar Cafe while the owner explained, in three languages, why Baghdad never stopped reading. Dinner was late; nobody minded.

Qishla clock tower & Abbasid Palace

The Ottoman-era Qishla's clock tower chimes over a riverside garden where poets still recite on Fridays; next door, the 13th-century Abbasid Palace keeps its brick muqarnas vaulting.
