Basra

Palms, poets, and the meeting of rivers

Southern Iraq · BEST SEASON: November - March

BASRA · FEB 2026 · 16 TRAVELERS

Basra comes alive after sunset. From November to March the evenings are mild, and the whole city drifts toward the Shatt al-Arab — the wide, slow river formed where the Tigris and Euphrates finally merge. On the Corniche, families pass the bronze statue of Badr Shakir al-Sayyab, the poet who dragged Arabic verse into the modern age, while wooden boats run twenty-minute loops past Sindbad Island, where legend says the sailor weighed anchor. In the Old City, UNESCO has restored a cluster of shanasheel — Ottoman-era merchant houses with carved timber balconies built to catch the river breeze — along with a stretch of the Ashar canal beside them. The Basra Museum fills one of Saddam's former palaces on the riverbank with Sumerian seals and Babylonian gold; the irony is lost on no one. Save a morning for Abu al-Khasib, where narrow creeks thread through date-palm groves and the tide, not traffic, sets the pace. One honest warning: skip June through September — this is one of the hottest cities on earth.

FROM OUR TRIP JOURNAL
On our February trip, our boatman Abu Ali cut the engine in an Abu al-Khasib creek so the group could hear nothing but water against the hull and wind moving through the palm crowns. Then a family waved us over from their garden gate for tea and a plate of khestawi dates, and our twenty-minute ride turned into two hours.

WHAT WE SHOW YOU

Shatt al-Arab Corniche

culture

Basra's evening living room: families promenade past the bronze statue of poet Badr Shakir al-Sayyab while wooden boats loop out toward Sindbad Island.

Old Basra Shanasheel Houses

heritage

Ottoman-era merchant houses with carved timber balconies built to funnel river breeze; UNESCO has restored eleven of them, plus a stretch of the Ashar canal.

Basra Museum

heritage

Sumerian cylinder seals and Babylonian jewellery displayed inside one of Saddam Hussein's former riverside palaces — pointed poetic justice, with labels in English and Arabic.

Abu al-Khasib Creeks and Date Groves

nature

Narrow tidal creeks thread through some of Iraq's densest date-palm groves; a slow boat here, engine cut, is the quietest hour in Basra.

Sindbad Island

culture

A low green island in mid-river where Basrawis say the sailor of the Thousand and One Nights set out; best seen from a sunset boat.

Gulf Fish and Noomi Basra

food

Grilled zubaidi fresh off Gulf boats, fat local dates, and the dried black limes all of Iraq calls noomi Basra, named for this port.
