Duhok

A mesa town, a bridge, a sacred spring

DUHOK · NOV 2025 · 18 TRAVELERS

Duhok is Iraq's most mountainous governorate, folded against the Turkish and Syrian borders, and most of what people come for sits outside the city itself. An hour southeast, in a valley near Shekhan, the Yazidis keep Lalish — you walk its stone courtyards barefoot, stepping over the thresholds rather than on them, past the fluted conical spires above the shrine of Sheikh Adi and down into the cave of the White Spring. North and east the roads climb hard. Amedi sits on a flat-topped mesa reached by a single cut road, lived on since Assyrian times; Zakho's Delal Bridge still steps over the Khabur in pointed stone arches. At Khinnis, Sennacherib had himself carved into a gorge above the head of a canal that once carried water toward Nineveh. Bring layers, as the evenings stay cold even in summer, and reckon on real driving between the mountain sites. Lalish asks bare feet and modest dress.

FROM OUR TRIP JOURNAL
At Lalish we left our shoes at the gate, as everyone does, and one of our group kept forgetting to step over the thresholds until a young caretaker began walking a pace ahead of her, tapping each doorsill with his foot so she would know to lift hers. By the White Spring nobody said much; we drank the cold water, filled two bottles, and drove back down in the dark with the shrine lamps just lit behind us.

WHAT WE SHOW YOU

Lalish

religious

The Yazidis' holiest place: fluted conical spires over the shrine of Sheikh Adi, courtyards crossed barefoot without touching a threshold, and the cold cave-spring called Kaniya Spî.

Amedi (Amadiya)

heritage

A town on a flat-topped mesa, lived on since Assyrian times and reached by one road cut into the rock; the old Bahdinan gate keeps its worn carvings.

Delal Bridge, Zakho

heritage

Zakho's humpbacked stone bridge steps over the Khabur in pointed arches under a crenellated parapet; in summer local boys climb the wall and jump into the green water.

Khinnis Rock Reliefs

heritage

Assyrian rock reliefs of Sennacherib and his gods, cut into a gorge above the head of a canal that once fed Nineveh; the Gomel river runs cold below.

Sulav & Zawa Mountain

nature

Terraced teahouses climb the waterfall slope at Sulav below Amedi, and the Zawa ridge rises over Duhok's dam lake — walnut shade, cold water, air cooler than the valley floor.
